Without plants we wouldn’t exist. They produce excellent food, beautiful flowers and keep us warm (cotton). Also, I don’t have to feel guilty when I kill a plant!
That’s a good question.
Plants are elemental for life on our planet. They convert sunlight into matter, which in turn is eaten by animals. No plants –> no animals. They also produce oxygen for animals to breathe (although a type of bacteria called cyanobacteria is responsible for creating most of the oxygen that helped life to evolve on earth).
Most importantly though plants are the cornerstone of our modern society and culture. A single farmer can produce food for many more people than themselves: This enables these other people to do different things than create food, like policing the street, writing poems or doing research.
I hope that my research will help in securing our food supplies.

But one of the cool things about Biology is that there is lots of similarity between organisms which might seem very different. For example, a lot of important genes and proteins in plants exist in a similar version in animals or bacteria and vice versa.
