• Question: what sort of thing do you like to do in the lab

      For me, nothing beats the feeling of doing a nice round of genotyping, i.e. assessing which gene variants (alleles) a population of plants carries. It is (nowadays) quite trivial, but it is an essential part of my work and when I see the data points line up nicely…..ach, it’s a good feeling 😀

      Well I find microscopy really cool, so some of my favourite work involves staining cells with special fluorescent treatments and then taking images of them at high magnifications.

      Something new I learnt to do this week was using a special probe to measure electrical resistance across a layer of cells, which tells you whether the layer has grown thick enough for certain experiments. Quite fiddly, but fun learning something new 🙂
