Science is about being curious and asking questions. As I am a curious fellow my motivation for being a scientist is already there: I want to know what something is the way it is.
And being a scientist I can design experiments to help me answer my questions. A good experiment will answer questions, but at the same time also create new questions.
So that is my motivation: Feeding my own curiosity, while at the same time advancing the knowledge of all people.

I agree with Nikolai, a lot of it is curiosity. When you are working on an experiment its really exciting wondering what results you might get, and if you will find anything totally unexpected.

Science also lets you do lots of cool things, like use massive microscopes to see tiny cells, which is always fun 🙂
