In my case it was because of the lecturers at my university. We had some really good lectures on genetics, so I got fascinated with it and wanted to learn more. At first, plants did not fascinate me much, but the more I learned the more I wanted to know about it. One thing led to another and here I am: A plant geneticist.
My advice for you is this “Do what you love”. If you like a particular subject then go for it. Talking to different people/teachers/lecturers is always helpful too, especially when you are unsure.

I have personally always been interested in medicine and fighting disease. The first step to working out how to treat diseases like bacterial infections is to understand how the pathogen actually makes people ill.

Therefore my research could help us learn more about how a certain bacteria harms lots of people around the world, and find new ways of targeting it for treatment, which I find very exciting 🙂

I had a friend when I was 7 who told me she wanted to be an archaeologist and dig up Tutankhamun… I was completely hooked and from that point onwards its all I ever really wanted to do. I never deviated from that aspiration and although I’m a somewhat different archaeologist to what I envisaged (I don’t dig up Egyptian mummies…) I have really kept on this path. I followed my dreams, really, and I never really expected to success.
      🙂
