I’d probably like to find a new type of antibiotic, as the ones we have at the moment won’t last forever due to the rise of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, which is a big problem for future medicine.

Even better would be finding a whole new approach to treating infections, one that bacteria would not be able to develop resistance to ever!

Usually it works the other way around: You make an important discovery and become famous for that (and of course get more funding for more research).

But in my field, my efforts would go (as they do now) into understanding genes and thus creating better varieties of wheat to help feed the growing world population.

So in short, I probably wouldn’t do anything different than I do now.
