I haven’t invented anything in the traditional sense, i.e. design a machine and patent it. But as a scientist you constantly have to invent new methods to get new information and data. So in a sense we are all inventors. This are usually small things though, so it won’t bring me fame and glory.
But it gives you a good feeling of accomplishment 🙂
Same as Nikolai, I’ve never properly invented something like a device (that’s more the work of engineers than biologists usually), but you do have to create your own ways of doing experiments all the time.
At the moment I am working on creating a special liquid (called media) with the right recipe so that it is as similar as possible to the juices in our gut, yet can still support my human cells and bacteria to survive long enough to do tests. It is proving quite tricky, because if you add too much of certain things like bile salts some of my cells start to die and break off from the layers I grow.. my cells can be annoyingly fussy at times!
