I actually don’t work with plants, but they can be pretty interesting!
My favourite part of my job is probably seeing exciting things with a microscope. For example, the other day I got a great photo of a human gut cell dividing to make 2 new cells. I had stained the DNA so you could see it lining up on each side ready to be sorted into each half!
Well, I like the variety of activities that my job offers me the most.
I do some work on the computer, some work in the lab, some in the field and some in the glasshouse. The things I do are usually very different from each other, i.e. it never gets boring.
The thing about my work with plants that I like best is crossing to create a new variety from two different plants. Every time I’m slightly nervous whether my cross will work and when it does I’m super excited. 🙂
I mostly work on invertebrates but they are closely tied to plants… The best part of my job is doing fieldwork, going out, taking samples, enjoying the wind on your face and imagining the world in the past!
I like it when I get to touch the plants — either when I’m harvesting them or watering them. The smell of fresh plant material is great, reminds me of the outdoor 🙂
