A lot of things. As a scientist I am curious by nature, but i am also a single human being, so the amount of my discoveries is limited.
Apart from my research, I’m really interested in deep sea and space exploration: They both are related to some extent (hostile environment that we don’t understand a lot). I just like imagining what type of creatures live down at the bottom of the sea or what types of stars and planets are out there and whether there is life on other planets (my guess would be yes.)
I’d really love to be able to understand how all elements of an ecosystem are all connected and how this changes over time. What are the impacts if this is disrupted? How does this cascade through a system? Are the results unexpected? How much do communities change over time? We know that many animal and plant communities are essentially individualistic and so they have changed constantly in their associations. How far have they changed over the last 2.5 million years?
Way too many things! I’d love to find out more about how the community of ‘friendly’ bacteria in our guts affect our health. We already think it affects lots of things, such as how vulnerable you are to food poisoning, and even how much weight people gain. Scientists have actually shown that bacteria from an overweight subject when put in a thin subject makes them gain weight really quickly, without changing anything else! Lots of people at the institute I work in are studying this kind of topic, quite interesting I think.
